EU, UK, US and Italian clothing sizes: the conversion chart that matches the shops

Shopping a look across Zalando, ASOS, Farfetch and a brand's own store means four size systems in one basket. Here is the chart, and the three reasons it won't always hold.

French sizing usually runs one step above EU sizing (EU 36 is often labelled FR 38), which is why French brands can feel a size small if you shop by the number alone.

Why your size changes between brands

Different fit models. Every brand cuts to its own body measurements; the same label means different centimetres.
Vanity sizing. Some brands have drifted their sizes larger over time, so a 38 now measures what a 40 once did.
Fabric and cut. Rigid denim, tailored wool and bias-cut silk fit differently from jersey in the same size.
